Private Coaching for HR Leaders

You may need somewhere to think clearly about the parts of HR that keep following you home.

You may need someone who understands why the work is so hard to put down.

  • The employee issue you cannot stop thinking about.

  • The manager who still has not handled what needs to be handled.

  • The executive decision you are trying to influence.

  • The risk you can see but cannot fully control.

  • The confidential situation you cannot really talk through with anyone else.

And underneath all of that, the question you may not say very often:

Can I keep doing HR this way?

Private coaching gives you a confidential place to sort what is happening, see the patterns underneath it, and decide what needs to change.

Not because you are failing at HR.

Because being able to carry a lot doesn’t mean you should have to carry it all.

When You Are Good at the Work and Still Tired From It

You may still care deeply about HR.

You may still be very good at it, and you may still be tired of:

  • everything landing back on HR

  • carrying employee pain long after the conversation ends

  • mentally supervising managers who should own more

  • thinking through risk after there is nothing else you can do tonight

  • cleaning up the same people problems in different forms

  • questioning whether you handled a difficult situation well enough

  • seeing culture or leadership patterns you cannot get enough traction to change

  • giving work your best energy and coming home with too little left

You do not necessarily need a different career.

You may need a different way to experience the one you already built.

What We Work On

Private coaching is shaped around what is actually happening in your HR life.

That may mean helping you:

Sort what is truly yours

HR responsibility is real.

That is exactly why it can become so difficult to see where your responsibility ends and someone else's begins.

We work through what is yours to guide, what is shared, what belongs with another leader, and where you may be carrying outcomes you can influence but cannot control.

Get the work out of your head

Hard HR situations require thought.

But useful processing can quietly turn into replay, risk scanning, unfinished loops, and second-guessing that continue long after the workday ends.

We create ways for the work to have somewhere to land besides your mind and body.

See the pattern underneath the latest fire

The employee complaint may not be only an employee complaint.

The turnover may not be only turnover.

The difficult manager may be part of a larger ownership, leadership, culture, or system pattern.

I help you step back far enough to see what keeps recreating the problem so you can respond more strategically.

Rebuild trust in your own judgment

HR rarely gives you perfect information or perfect outcomes.

You can make a sound decision and still have someone unhappy.

You can give good advice and still have a leader ignore it.

You can handle something well and still wonder afterward if you got it wrong.

We work on developing a steadier standard for evaluating your own decisions without requiring impossible certainty.

Decide what needs to change

Sometimes the answer is a small shift in how you are carrying the work.

Sometimes it is a clearer conversation with a leader.

Sometimes it is a change in role design, expectations, ownership, or support.

And sometimes the deeper question really is whether this role, organization, or version of HR still fits.

The goal is not to push you toward staying or leaving.

It is to help you make that decision from clarity instead of depletion.

What It Feels Like to Work Together

You bring the situation.

I help you slow it down enough to see what is actually happening.

We look at:

  • what is being said

  • what is not being said

  • who owns what

  • where the risk really sits

  • what pattern may be repeating

  • what part is draining you

  • what your judgment is telling you

  • what needs a conversation, a system, a boundary, a decision, or simply somewhere to land

Then we identify the next useful move.

Sometimes the answer is practical.

Sometimes it is structural.

Sometimes it is deeply personal.

Usually, it is clearer once the pattern becomes visible.

A Few Reasons HR Leaders Come to Me

You may want private coaching if you are thinking:

  • “I cannot stop thinking about this situation.”

  • “I know some of this is mine, but I don’t think all of it should be.”

  • “I am tired of managers handing HR their discomfort.”

  • “I keep seeing the same problem, but I can’t get far enough upstream to change it.”

  • “I know I made a reasonable decision. Why am I still questioning myself?”

  • “I don’t want to leave HR. I just don’t want this version of it anymore.”

  • “I need somewhere confidential to think this through with someone who understands the work.”

If one of those sounds familiar, that is enough of a reason to start a conversation.

Hi, I’m April

I have spent nearly three decades leading inside complex organizations, including serving as both a Chief Operating Officer and Chief People Officer.

I have led small teams and very large ones.

I’ve sat on the operational side of the table and the HR side.

I have worked through growth, culture change, difficult people decisions, leadership gaps, organizational redesign, performance issues, workforce strategy, and the kinds of situations where there is no perfect answer and everyone still expects HR to have one.

So when you tell me:

“Some of this really is my responsibility.”

I understand.

When you say:

“I can see what needs to change, but I can’t make the organization do it.”

I understand that too.

And when you say:

“I handled the situation, but I am still carrying it.”

That makes perfect sense to me.

My work combines executive coaching, organizational thinking, pattern recognition, and a deep understanding of how people systems actually operate.

But the work is not about helping you see what you could not quite see while you were standing in the middle of it.

I listen for what is not being said.

I look for the pattern beneath the latest problem.

And I help you turn complexity into a clearer next move.

Private Coaching Options

  • A small brown bird with black markings perched on a thin branch against a blurred neutral background.

    Single Strategy Session

Best for: One situation you need to think through clearly.

A focused private session for a difficult HR issue, leadership decision, recurring pattern, role question, or situation you cannot quite get out of your head.

    You bring the situation.

We sort the noise from what matters and identify your next useful move.

  • A silhouette of a twisted pine tree on a rocky slope at sunset, with the sun low on the horizon reflecting off the water in the background.

    3-Month Private Coaching

Best for: An HR leader who knows one conversation is not enough.

Over three months, we work with the real situations showing up in your role while also identifying the patterns underneath them.

    This may include:

    • responsibility and ownership

    • difficult people situations

    • manager and executive dynamics

    • confidence and decision-making

    • recurring HR fires

    • strategic influence

    • work that follows you home

    • role sustainability

    • career or role redesign

The goal is not to create another list of things for you to work on.

It is to help HR become clearer, lighter, and more sustainable as you are actually living it.

  • Sun setting over mountain range with a winding gravel road in a grassy field.

    Longer-Term Strategic Partnership

Best for: Senior HR leaders navigating significant complexity, organizational change, or a larger leadership transition.

This work can include deeper organizational and leadership design alongside the personal side of leading through it.

    We may work on:

    • organizational structure

    • decision authority

    • executive dynamics

    • leadership capability

    • culture and accountability

    • HR operating design

    • role evolution

    • strategic influence

    • sustainability as responsibility expands

This is where my operational, people, and organizational experience come together most fully.

Not Sure Which You Need?

You do not have to diagnose yourself before we talk.

If something about the way you are doing HR no longer feels sustainable, start there.

We can talk about what is happening, what you have already tried, and what kind of support would actually be useful.

No pressure to turn one conversation into a long engagement.

You Can Be Good at HR Without Giving Up Your Wellness and Your Evenings

The goal is not to become less caring.

Less responsible.

Less thoughtful.

Or less committed.

It is to stop measuring good HR leadership by how much you can personally absorb.

You can care about people without carrying every outcome.

You can take risk seriously without thinking about it all night.

You can support managers without becoming responsible for every part they avoid.

You can make meaningful HR impact without disappearing inside the role.

Less Grind. More Leadership Genius.
